ELIZABETHTOWN - Clara Phillips Melville Baldwin passed away on Dec. 13, 2012, at Horace Nye Nursing Home. She was born on Sept. 12, 1920, to George C. and Evelyn Johnson Phillips in Jamestown.
Clara graduated from Cornell University and earned her Ph.D. from Stanford University. With her late husband, Alfred L. Baldwin, she taught and conducted research in the field of child development at Cornell, NYU and the University of Rochester.
Before becoming ill, Clara was active in her church and academic associations. She enjoyed traveling, entertaining, reading and spending summers at her camp on Upper Saranac Lake.
Surviving are her son, Dr. Dean F. Melville and his wife Sandra of Upper Jay; and two grandsons: Garth and his wife Holly of Rye and Matthew of AuSable Forks. Grandchildren include Maghan, Shannon, Cody, Alesha, Beckett, Bret, Sean and Jack. She had one great-great-grandchild, Domanic, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her siblings Anita Kent, Joseph Phillips, Donald Phillips and Donna Meder. Predeceasing Clara, in addition to her spouse, were her grandson Benjamin, her great-granddaughter Faith, her sister Betty, and her ex-husband Richard W. Melville.
There will be no services at this time. Burial will take place in May at Evergreen Cemetery at White Store, near Norwich, N.Y.
