Autism doesn’t cause violence

December 20, 2012
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

I understand how everybody looks for something or someone to blame when a tragedy such a the one in Newtown, Conn., occurs. What I can't understand, though, is how the media can jump on the autism bandwagon before they even have all of the facts.

I am a parent of a child with a form of autism spectrum disorder, and trust me, they struggle enough. The bullying they get from peers is bad enough, but now everybody has in the back of their mind that children with autism are violent. This is not true. My son is a wonderful child, and he truly cares about other people.

I just hope that people keep their hearts and their minds open when it comes to all children. Autism does not make a boy a killer. The Newtown tragedy is just that, a tragedy. Let's not make it worse for some of our children.
