A 70-year-old Newcomb man was arrested Monday after police said he confessed to sexually abusing a girl who was 11 and 12 years old at the time.

Charles L. Minke was charged with second-degree sexual abuse, a class A misdemeanor, state police Investigator Jonathan Garrow told the Enterprise Tuesday.

Minke was arrested after the girl, who's now 15 years old, told child protective services in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, that Minke sexually abused her when she was living with him and his wife in Newcomb during the summers of 2008 and 2009. Garrow said authorities in North Carolina subsequently notified Essex County Child Protective Services, and state police were then contacted.

"That led to an interview with him where he confessed to inappropriate sexual contact with the girl at his home in Newcomb," Garrow said.

Minke was arraigned in Newcomb town court and remanded to Essex County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail.

Garrow said the investigation is ongoing.
