LAKE PLACID - "A Clearing in the Distance," a book by Witold Rybczvynski about Frederick Law Olmsted, known primarily for his role in creating Central and Prospect parks, will be the subject of the Lake Placid Institute Book Club meeting Monday.
Olmsted traveled to China at the age of 21, co-founded "The Nation" magazine and, during the Civil War, ran the organizational forerunner to the Red Cross.
The group meets at 7 p.m. at the Lake Placid Library.
The book club normally meets the last Monday of the month, but will meet two weeks earlier in December due to the holidays.
