Red Storm hockey edged by Hornets

PLATTSBURGH - The Saranac Lake boys hockey team opened Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to Plattsburgh.

Alex Maston scored the game-winning goal at the 8:54 mark of the third period, with assists going to Jack Tolosky and Mike Stetz.

After the Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead, the Red Storm responded with a goal at the 6:24 mark of the second period. Saranac Lake's lone goal came off the stick of Quinn Urquhart, who took a pass from fellow senior Nick Bayruns.

Plattsburgh held a narrow 21-20 advantage in shots on goal. Saranac Lake goaltender Blake Darrah stopped 18 shots, while Robby Knowles was credited with 20 saves for the Hornets.

Tolosky scored Plattsburgh's first goal unassisted at the 12:31 mark of the first period.

The loss evened Saranac Lake's record at 1-1-1. It was the season-opener for Plattsburgh (1-0).


Ogdensburg 3, Tupper Lake 0

TUPPER LAKE - The Ogdensburg boys hockey team scored three goals in a span of four minutes, 26 seconds to secure a 3-0 victory over Tupper Lake on Wednesday.

Brandon Mullin scored twice and Drew Costin scored the third goal for OFA. All three goals came during short-handed situations.

Marcus Richer stop 32 shots in goal for the Lumberjacks, who fell to 0-2 with the loss.

The game was a Section X, Division II matchup.
