SARANAC LAKE -?Adirondack Health has recruited a highly experienced mental health professional to provide outpatient services at its health centers in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.
Terry Surma Hilger is a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over 14 years of experience providing professional, empathetic counseling in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. She relocated to northern New York about a year and a half ago from Arizona where she treated patients in a variety of clinical settings.
Her approach to treatment involves an active partnership with primary care physicians to provide patients with the information and support they need to improve their mental and physical health. Terry believes a proactive approach through early detection, education and collaboration with medical staff leads to individualized, patient-centered care.
"I believe in treating each patient as an individual," Hilger said. "A person's treatment is enhanced through a team approach within the medical setting."
The services Hilger will provide include psychiatric evaluation and treatment of patients age 14 and older. She will be accepting referrals from primary care providers or other medical specialties and some self referrals.
She will see patients on Monday and Wednesday at the Lake Placid Health Center, and on Tuesday and Thursday at the Tupper Lake Health Center. For more information, contact the Lake Placid Health Center at 518-523-1717, or the Tupper Lake Health Center at 518-359-7000.
Hilger is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She obtained her Master of Science Degree in Nursing/Community Mental Health from Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz. She received clinical training in numerous psychiatric settings in Phoenix, Ariz.
In her free time, Hilger enjoys traveling, experiencing new cultures and spending time with her grandson.
