Won’t put father on Medicaid

November 30, 2012
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

My father, Ken LaVair Sr., has worked his whole life and was never on welfare or social service, as they call it now. He also served honarably in the Army National Guard, the Army Reserve and the Army during Vietnam. Now that my dad is 74 years old and in failing health, the health care facilities want me to get Medicaid because Medicare only pays 80 percent of the bills incurred. I will not put my dad on Medicaid because Franklin County wants to take my dad's income because they only allow a person around $740 a month to live off of. My dad can't live on this, so this is ridiculous for anyone to live on even $900 a month!

Thankfully, the VA will cover almost all bills incurred by a veteran. I say, if you can find a new insurance or agency that will cover you, then do it! I have tried to get my dad in an Advantage plan through Medicare, but they deny him because of pre-existing disease. I hope Obamacare will stop this!
