SARANAC LAKE - A Tupper Lake man is facing multiple felony counts of rape for allegedly having sex with a girl under the age of 17 in a wooded area in the village of Saranac Lake.

Jeremiah J. Finley, 30, of Tupper Lake, was arrested by Tupper Lake village police at 1:46 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant from Saranac Lake village court. Tupper Lake police tranpsorted him to Saranac Lake for processing where he was charged with five counts of third-degree rape, a class E felony, and a single count of third-degree criminal sexual act, also a felony. Finley also faces six counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of making a false written statement, both of which are misdemeanors.

Village Police Chief Bruce Nason said he could only provide limited information about the case in the interest of protecting the alleged victim. He said the girl was under 17 years of age but wouldn't be more specific.

She and Finley had met through "mutual acquaintances" and had sexual intercourse in a wooded area of the village at least a half dozen times over a three-month period, Nason said. Nason wouldn't say more specifically where the alleged rapes occurred.

"It was reported by a person that new the victim and had become aware of what was occuring," the chief said. "That's how it came to us and we started looking into it."

Finley was arraigned in village court Wednesday and remanded to the Franklin County Jail in Malone in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.
