To the editor:
I'm a dairy farmer, and I'm voting for Bill Owens for Congress. Why? Here are the reasons.
First, Bill knows that the agricultural industry is the major economic driver in the district. He sits on the House Agriculture Committee. He voted for the proposed 2013 Farm Bill, legislation that is needed so that our farmers can make business plans for next year.
Second, Bill reached across the aisle to work with Republicans to secure the support necessary to pass the Farm Bill and move it out of committee for a vote by the full House.
Immediately, Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, refused to bring the bill to a vote. Why? Well, some experienced Washington observers say it's because Boehner feared the political fallout from elements of his party if the bill were to pass with support from more Democrats than Republicans. It is obvious that, despite the fact that our agricultural industry is reeling from last year's floods and this year's drought, Boehner decided to leave us hanging in uncertainty. Partisan politics at its worst!
Now here's the kicker: Bill's opponent brought Boehner to the district to support his candidacy. He said, "I'll look to this man for advice and direction." Think of it, the potential of our congressman beholden to someone who places partisan politics ahead of the needs of our industry. We cannot allow this to happen!
Bill Owens has earned our vote to return to Congress. Bill seeks to learn about the issues from those who are affected most. Then he sets out to reflect those views in his actions. He's not flamboyant. He is intelligent and level-headed. Most of all, he cares about us!
Please join me in voting for Bill Owens.
