To the editor:
Did I read the story correctly? Did the paper say that Franklin County proposed budget for 2013 is increasing by 5.57 percent? ("The tax levy increase stands at 5.57 percent.") We all know that the tax cap is just a political catch-phrase and is meaningless.
At that rate, our taxes will double in 13 years. I am an accounting professor and a CPA. I work for New York state. My salary for the last three school years has increased by zero percent each year. The same cannot be said for my property taxes. It's not that I planned to retire, but at this rate, I'll have to dip into my retirement fund to pay my taxes while I have to continue to work. Never mind what could happen with assessments. Never mind what could happen with our income tax rates. I can't afford this. WE can't afford this.
