To the editor:
My name is Travis Manson. I am a professional bass angler who fishes on the Bassmaster Elite Series.
I recently took part in the Hometown Heroes Musky Challenge that took place in Brasher Falls. This event helped Fort Drum's soldiers and was a great opportunity to give back to the sacrifices that these soldiers made.
The event also brought in a few former NFL football players: Sam Kennedy, who played for the San Francisco 49ers, and Eddie Kidd, who played for the Raiders.
I love this area of New York. I have competed in quite a few fishing tournaments over the last few years and enjoy coming to this part of the state, so when FISHCAP and Wounded Warriors Outdoor Adventures invited me to attend this event, I didn't hesitate!
The day started out with many of the volunteers serving a breakfast for the soldiers and getting them paired up to fish the river. It was a fun-filled day with many fish caught.
It seemed like all the communities from around the area showed up and supported the event. That evening we also had a flag football event that allowed the children to play with the pros. It was a fun filled day and a great evening for football.
I was also extremely impressed with Karen Bisso, who is running for state Assembly. I have participated in a lot of these type of events, and it is rare to see someone in office or running for office attend. I think this speaks volumes to her commitment, and I know she really helped out and supported the soldiers here. I could tell that events like this is what brings the communities closer, and she made all of us who attended the event feel welcomed!
I look forward to coming back to the area in 2013 for the Bassmaster Elite Series Event held on the St. Lawrence River in August, and I look forward to helping out in this event next year!
