SARANAC LAKE - Painter Cat Micheels will open her exhibition of new works, titled "The B-Side," with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 at the NorthWind Fine Arts gallery.
NorthWind Fine Arts, located at 36 Broadway, is a cooperative gallery with 10 members, including Micheels. The reception is free and open to the public.
Micheels, in a press release, described her new exhibit as "personal ... politically and socially charged." Up until now she has mostly showcased scenic landscape and still life paintings, but these new ones, she said, are different.
"All of us at some point experience life-changing events," Micheels said. "As an artist, this change in events has caused me to see the world through a different lens. I have departed from what I have produced in the past because it cannot adequately express what I see and feel.
"My experiences as a lesbian, daughter, sister, and mother are all intimately entwined; one cannot be separated from the other. Though my subject is personal, it is not meant to be just about me. My purpose is to make the viewer think beyond what they see on the canvas."
Courtney Miller, the oldest daughter of Micheels' partner, will read her poetry at the reception.
"I believe we will deliver an exciting literary and visual experience for our viewers," Micheels said in the release.
