Progressive group opens campaign headquarters, backs Democrats and Duprey

SARANAC LAKE - A local progressive political group officially opens its campaign headquarters today and has endorsed a list of candidates: five Democrats and one Republican.

Voters for Change, which played an active local role during the 2004 and 2008 presidential elections, has temporarily moved into commercial space at 11 Woodruff St., formerly home to the Ampersound music shop.

Although the group says it's not associated with a political party, most of the candidates it supports are Democrats, including Harrietstown town supervisor candidate Tom Catillaz, state Assembly candidate Dennis Tarantino, incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Owens, incumbent U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and President Barack Obama. Incumbent Assemblywoman Janet Duprey is the only Republican the group supports.

"There was good support for Janet Duprey because of her stance on women's issues," Voters for Change member Nancy Murphy told the Enterprise. "We are not part of the Democratic Party. We do not endorse specifically Democrat. We do it according to our principles."

In a press release Voters for Change issued, it described itself as an "issues-based organization promoting positive change and citizen engagement in the political process." The release said the group will provide information and analysis on "key election issues as well as candidates' positions and their campaign materials." Volunteers will also be available to help voters get registered.

Voters for Change said its primary issues this election season include the following:

-Tax policies that strengthen and support the middle class, as well as job creation

-Creating jobs through investments in clean energy, infrastructure, education and research

-Tax reform

-More regulation of the financial sector

-Affordable health care for all

-Responsible stewardship of the environment.

Murphy described today's event as a "soft opening." She said the group hopes to bring candidates to the headquarters next Saturday for a grand opening.

Starting today, the headquarters will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
