Trail would be a draw to tourists

September 27, 2012
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

My name is Larry Jewett. Our group, the Halton Outdoor Club, based in Burlington, Ontario, has enjoyed holidays to the parks of New York state for 30 years. We have twice easily filled a bus for one-week stays in Lake Placid, and you are now one of our favorite ski destinations.

I was glad to read in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise a proposal to remove the rail line from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake ("North Elba town board: Remove train tracks"). This looks very good for you as it reflects the same values we have in Ontario and have seen in other forward-thinking regions of New York state.

We have a mix of sporting abilities within our membership, and have to look more to the types of activities a recreational trail would offer. We are about 600 members, and most of us are also members of other outdoor groups, and we see what similar groups across the Greater Toronto Area are doing. Our club would welcome the opportunity to enjoy a recreational trail joining the two towns.

I have no doubt that a recreational trail between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake would make a very good holiday destination into an even better one.
