SCHUYLER FALLS - The Saranac Lake boys and girls cross country teams hit the road Tuesday for a four-team meet on a 2.7-mile course against Plattsburgh, Seton Catholic and Peru.
The Red Storm girls came away with a 27-29 victory over Plattsburgh, but lost 15-42 to Peru and 28-30 to Seton Catholic. The boys team lost close showdowns with Peru (23-33), Plattsburgh (28-29) and Seton Catholic (25-30).
"Our girls team did what they are good at: running as a pack," said Saranac Lake coach Joe Merrihew. "Our fifth, sixth and seventh girls made a huge difference in the outcome of the scoring, giving us one win and one near miss."
Elena Beideck was Saranac Lake's top runner in the girls race, finishing ninth in 19:11. Johanna Morhs finished 11th in 19:40, Jackie Garso was 15th in 20:22, Remy Orticelle was 17th in 21:12, Grace Sullivan was 18th in 21:13, Jacinda Riggs was 19th in 21:24 and Kaileigh Woodruff was 22nd in 21:57.
Margaret Champagne of Seton Catholic won the girls race in 17:00 to beat out Peru's Ashley Leta, who finished in 17:17.
In the boys race, Zane Pelletieri placed sixth in 16:30 to lead the way for Saranac Lake. Teammate Chris Willette wasn't far behind with his seventh place finish in 16:45. Max Paul was 12th in 17:22, Chris Schneider was 16th in 17:56, Nate Miller was 37th in 19:05 and Nick Mann was 47th in 20:05.
"Many of the boys ran above their ability levels today, showing the progress we are making against the bigger teams in the league," Merrihew said.
Seton Catholic's Mitch Ryan won the boys race in 14:55, followed by teammate Evan Page (15:26) in second.
