BOYS SOCCER

Peru 3, Saranac Lake 1

PERU - The Saranac Lake boys soccer team fell behind early and never recovered on the way to dropping a 3-1 Northern Soccer League game against Peru on Monday.

Peru opened the scoring with a goal by Jacob Dick in the 23rd minute, then went into halftime with a two-goal lead after Justin Wiley scored in the 32nd minute.

Saranac Lake cut the lead to 2-1 when Blake Battistoni received a pass from Bradley Shumway on a direct kick 20 minutes into the second half. Dick scored his second goal 12 minutes later to put the game out of reach for the Indians.

"Today's main focus was eliminating the long ball and returning to a more disciplined passing game," said Saranac Lake coach Bill Wilson. "We were successful for about 75 percent of the game. When we pass, we control the pace of the game, which leads to more scoring opportunities."

Saranac Lake goalie Oliver Holmes stopped 14 shots throughout the game. Michael Danis made six saves for Peru, which improved to 6-2 on the season with the win.

"I was proud of the team's efforts," Wilson said. "At the halfway point in our season, we are beginning to work more as a unit."

The Red Storm will bring a 1-5 record into Friday's game on the road in Beekmantown.
