To the editor:
I met Tom Catillaz during the 2008 presidential election campaign and later came to know him as a supporting member of Common Ground Garden, Saranac Lake's first community garden on Old Lake Colby Road. With good leadership, the support and participation of volunteers, local groups and Adirondack Medical Center, we found land, seed money from grants and master gardeners to teach novice gardeners how to bring their own vegetables to the table. Some of the vegetables also made it to the weekly free Community Suppers at the United Methodist Church.
Tom's knowledge of Saranac Lake and support at village board meetings was invaluable in obtaining the location for the second community garden on the site of the reclaimed landfill.
From what I've seen of Tom in action, he has the healthy growth of Saranac Lake foremost on his mind. And we need a healthy, sustainable Saranac Lake for our children and our grandchildren.
There have been some negative comments placed on the newspaper's blog site that I have found disturbing because they are comprised of hints and allegations with no substantiating information. They are barbs thrown out to the public by people who hide behind the anonymity of blog names.
I hope people will not be turned against Tom by snipers but will talk to him and look to his record and to his plans for our town's future by electing him town supervisor. And please, REGISTER AND VOTE THIS YEAR.
