Saranac Lake police probe clothing store burglary

SARANAC LAKE - Village police are investigating a late-night burglary at a clothing and screenprinting business downtown.

Police Chief Bruce Nason said someone broke into Bear Essentials, next to the Berkeley Green at the corner of Main Street and Broadway, between when the store closed Thursday evening and when staff showed up to work this morning.

Bear Essentials owner Greg Moore told the Enterprise the suspect or suspects broke in through the back door and stole its cash register.

"We locked up a little after 6 p.m. last night, and I didn't get here until 8 o'clock this morning, and when I looked, it was the back door that used to go to the porch that I had removed - it was all smashed in," Moore said Friday. "They came in and went out through there, and the (cash) register was gone."

Moore said there was cash and several checks in the cash register, although he said he's still trying to figure out how much money was stolen.

The only merchandise that was taken was a couple of Saranac Lake Red Storm sweatshirts, "so I'm assuming they're local," Moore said of the thief or thieves.

So far, police have no credible leads in the case, Nason said.

"If anyone has information or saw or heard anything, we'd certainly love to hear from them," he said.
