LAKE PLACID - Small paintings, called "Oomalas" by their creator Vicki Celeste, are now on display upstairs at the Lake Placid Public Library. The whimsical figures bring to mind colorful illustrations in story books of eastern European fairy tales, according to a library press release.

The library encourages everyone to come and see the display that will be in place for the next two months.

Celeste, who runs the Local Fringe Gallery in Saranac Lake, says she had never done paintings in a series before.

"Then I did one of these, and I didn't know why I used that shape, but I decided to do another and then thought it would be interesting to see what I could do if I forced myself to stay in that form."

Part of her inspiration came from childhood memories of Ukrainian nesting dolls. They are meant to convey a feeling of love.

Celeste now has more than 70 oomalas in various stages of completion and is working on line drawings for a coloring book of them.
