After storm, Cuomo declares emergency for St. Lawrence County

July 19, 2012
Associated Press

ALBANY (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency for St. Lawrence County to enable state officials to mobilize cleanup and recovery help.

Severe thunderstorms with winds over 60 mph, hail and heavy rain knocked out power, downed trees and damaged homes and businesses in northern New York.

Cuomo says the declaration enables him to direct state resources to local governments that need them. It applies to the county and contiguous areas.

Some of the worst damage was reported in Potsdam, where the roof on a pizza shop was torn off. Several other buildings were damaged.

National Grid says power has been restored to all but a handful of 16,000 homes and businesses that lost it Tuesday.
