SARANAC LAKE - Robert K. Hagar, 84, of 1264 Pine St., Saranac Lake, died Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
Born in Jersey City, N.J. on Nov. 15, 1927, he was the son of Paul and Katherine (Bell) Hagar. Robert married Joan Vollmers on Dec. 13, 1952, in Rutherford, N.J. She predeceased him in 1968. Robert later married Jacklyn Hickey on Sept. 27, 1969.
Robert attended and graduated from Syracuse College of Forestry in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in forestry. He worked for the New York State Board of Equalization and Assessment as a forester for 36 years until his retirement in 1982. Robert was an avid bird watcher his entire life and traveled extensively to many different countries looking for birds. He was an all around outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, birding, botany, gardening and skiing. He is a veteran of the United States Navy serving at the end of World War II.
He is survived by his wife Jacklyn Hagar of Saranac Lake; three sons, Robert Hagar of Jay, William Hagar and his wife Darlene of Lewis, and Thomas Hagar and his wife Amy of Saranac Lake; one brother, Arthur Hagar and wife Jean of Taylors, S.C.; five grandchildren, Todd, Nick, Ben, Rebecca and Courtney; three great-grandchildren, Chad, Hazel and Elijah; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, one son David Hagar, and one brother Paul Hagar.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at Mountain View Cemetery in Upper Jay with Rev. Joyce Bruce officiating.
