Nominate someone for king and queen

December 29, 2011
Guest editorial by the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee

It is time to select the king and queen of the 2012 Winter Carnival. In keeping with our procedure in recent years, we are seeking nominations from the community.

Specific information with regard to submitting a nomination can be found in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, at the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce office or on our website, www.saranaclakewintercarnival.com.

Once the nominations have been collected, all past kings and queens are invited to an assembly on Jan. 20 to select from among the nominations. This is no small task since the assembly might review as many as 20 nominations for each position.

The nominating materials are presented to the assembly exactly as they are received from the community. There is no pre-screening or editing that could influence the outcome. The assembled kings and queens are given a period of time to review the materials and then are called upon to vote. Final selection is by secret ballot.

The selection is based upon volunteerism within the community. The assembly is looking for a long-term and broad-based commitment to making life more livable, more pleasant and more enjoyable - both for the folks who live here and for those who visit. The volunteer activities can be organized or completely self-motivated. They can be as diverse as organizing a major community event or as seemingly minor as shoveling a neighbor's sidewalk. We may end up with someone who is highly visible within the community, and we may end up with someone fairly anonymous who is very devoted to caring for others but stays out of the spotlight. The only thing we wish to avoid is rewarding someone as a "volunteer" when they are actually doing their job. There are many people whose profession is to help others. We are seeking the people who help others even though it is not their job.

Those wishing to nominate individuals are requested to submit each nomination separately, in hard copy. No electronic nominations (email) will be accepted. Nominations must include the candidate's volunteer services history and must be signed by the person submitting the nomination. Nominations must be received no later than Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012. Please send all nominations to the Winter Carnival Committee, P.O. Box 829, Saranac Lake, NY 12983. You can also drop them off at the Enterprise at 54 Broadway or the chamber of commerce office at 193 River St.

So please, send us your nominations. We know there are numerous people who are worthy of this honor. Our regret is that we can honor only one king and queen each year.
