Local Olympians Lowell Bailey and Tim Burke will compete for the U.S. Biathlon team in the IBU World Cup in Ostersund, Sweden Wednesday through Sunday. The team was announced Sunday.
Joining Bailey and Burke will be Leif Nordgren and Jay Hakkinen on the men's team. Sara Studebaker, Laura Spector, Lanny Barnes and Susan Dunklee will represent the U.S. on the women's side.
Bailey is a Lake Placid native, while Burke hails from Paul Smiths.
"The team had a great summer and fall of training and has shown steady progress," said Max Cobb, President and CEO of U.S. Biathlon. "We would have liked to have more time on snow before the first World Cup events. Natural snow finally came to Ostersund (Saturday), and while it was only a few inches of heavy wet snow it really does give everyone a smile to finally see the ground become white.
"The course in Ostersund has been prepared with snow that was stockpiled last winter and covered with a tarp and woodchips to keep it through the summer. Without that, we would not be able to have any training or racing in Ostersund this November."
