ALBANY - Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, Nov. 29, in honor of a Fort Drum soldier who died in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, on Monday, Nov. 21.
Private Jackie L. Diener II died of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was from Boyne City, Mich., and assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum.
"I join with all New Yorkers in mourning the loss of Private Diener and I send my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and fellow soldiers," Cuomo said in a prepared statement. "We will honor the service of this Fort Drum soldier and we will be forever grateful for his dedication to our nation."
The governor directs that the flags on all state buildings be lowered to half-staff in honor of and in tribute to New York service members and those stationed in New York who are killed in action or die in a combat zone.
