State police were still searching this morning for a car and driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision with another vehicle Sunday morning on the Adirondack Northway.

Mary J. Morrissey, 65, of Mechanicville, died from injuries she suffered in the crash, which took place around 7:20 a.m. in the town of Schroon.

Police said Morrissey was in the passenger seat of a 2000 Geo Prism driven by her brother, Thomas LaFountain, 59, of Mechanicville, that was traveling northbound on I-87 when it was struck from behind by another northbound car. LaFountain's vehicle veered off the east side of the highway and hit a guard rail, careened back across the road and struck an earthen embankment.

Morrissey was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was taken to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake for an autopsy.

LaFountain suffered facial lacerations. He was taken by ambulance to Glens Falls Hospital where he was treated and released.

Police said the vehicle that rear-ended LaFountain's car left the scene. It was described as light-colored, "possibly" a Toyota, with the letters "DWD" on part of its license plate. Police also believe the car had substantial front-end damage.
