ELIZABETHTOWN - Essex County is close to appointing a new public health director.
During Monday's meeting of the county Ways and Means Committee, supervisors agreed unanimously to put the conditional hiring of Linda Beers to a vote before the full Board of Supervisors next week.
Beers currently serves as director of the county Public Health Department's Services for Children with Disabilities. If supervisors approve her hire, she'll replace Kathy Daggett, who was appointed as interim director earlier this year.
Supervisor David Blades, R-Lewis, chaired an interview committee charged with finding a new public health director after Karen Levison resigned. Levison is now the commissioner of public health for Saratoga County.
"For the past two years, we've been struggling with the position of director of public health," Blades said. "We had a person that accepted, and then she left us."
According to Blades, the search committee worked closely with Daggett to find a new director.
The hiring was not officially approved by the Human Services Committee, but Blades said members of that group told him personally they support the appointment.
County board Chairman Randy Douglas, D-Jay, appointed the search committee, and he commended their decision.
"They've done a wonderful job and selected a wonderful candidate," he said.
Beers declined to comment on the appointment, pending action by the full board, but she told supervisors she felt "honored."
Blades said the position will pay about $78,000 annually.
