PERU - The entry road to the state-run AuSable Point Campground and Day Use Area is closed until further notice due to flooding, the state Department of Environmental Conservation announced Wednesday.
"We closed the road to ensure public safety and to protect the integrity of the road," stated DEC Region 5 Director Betsy Lowe. "We know this is an inconvenience to anglers, birders and other recreationists, but it would be irresponsible to not close the road. Users could get hurt, vehicles could be damaged, and the road itself could be made unusable for longer period of time if the road were to remain open."
DEC has placed barricades at the end of the road and will be patrolling the area to ensure the public is abiding by the closure.
The road will be reopened once the waters have receded and it is determined the road can handle motorized traffic without further damage.
