Democrat ends 150-year Republican reign with victory over Conservative

SARANAC LAKE - The second special election in the Tri-Lakes area in less than a year has produced the first Democrat to represent a vast swath of northern New York since before the Civil War.

"Upstate New York hasn't received this much attention since the Miracle on Ice," Democratic and Working Families candidate Bill Owens said in his victory speech in Plattsburgh. "And tonight, with the entire country watching, upstate New Yorkers sent a message."

Meanwhile, his opponent, Lake Placid resident Doug Hoffman, conceded his campaign just after midnight this morning in front of a crowd of about 50 crestfallen supporters and a horde of local and national media and political operatives at the Hotel Saranac. Hoffman stuck to the message of reducing taxes and government spending, his main theme as the Conservative Party's candidate for New York's 23rd District congressional seat.

"Seriously, let's join in helping Bill Owens be our congressman," Hoffman said. "Let's work with him together, but let's make sure that we get the message out there that we can't spend money that we don't have. We can't tax and regulate our people and our businesses and expect to have job growth."

Spirits were high at the Hotel Saranac as the night's returns began to filter in shortly after polls closed at 9 p.m. Members of the crowd such as North Elba town Councilman Bob Miller spoke passionately in favor of Hoffman - both as a person and as a conservative standard-bearer.

"I've never known anyone in 20 years who's had a bad word to say about him," Miller said of the accountant and businessman.

"He's the least likely guy you've ever met to run for Congress. He's a geek, but he's honest, and he's in it for the right reasons. He said, 'There's something bigger than me going on here, and I need to step up to the plate.'"

"Most of all, I hope what I have shown you and the rest of the world is that you don't have to be polished," Hoffman said. "You don't have to be poised, and you don't have to be a rock star to be a politician. All of us can step up to the plate and do it, so let's do it."

As the night went on and a roughly 4,000-vote Owens margin held steady, the crowd became increasingly anxious. As 60, then 70 percent of the vote came in and Owens maintained his lead, a large portion of the crowd drifted sadly out of the hotel, giving sincere embraces to Hoffman family members who wore their grief plainly on their faces.

As of this morning, Owens had 51.5 percent of the vote, compared to 43.7 percent for Hoffman and 4.9 percent for Dede Scozzafava, who was on the Republican and Independence party lines. Scozzafava withdrew from the race Saturday due to declining poll numbers, and turned on her party Sunday, telling her supporters to back Owens. However, the Republican Party decided at that point to back Hoffman.

The district's Republican Party had backed Scozzafava for the seat that longtime Rep. John McHugh vacated to become Army secretary, but the Conservative Party backed Hoffman, whom the Republican leaders had rejected. This divided the Republican Party, with many prominent national conservatives, including former presidential candidate and U.S. senator Fred Thompson and former Alaska governor and vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin backing Hoffman. He also received substantial funding from national conservative groups such as the Club for Growth and right-wing media personalities Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, and the race drew national attention.

Owens won in Hoffman's home Essex County, where Republicans have a substantial voter registration advantage, with 3,718 votes compared to 3,175 for Hoffman and 432 for Scozzafava. Keene town Councilman Paul Martin couldn't vote in the Hoffman-Owens race because, like Hoffman, he lives in the neighboring 20th District, but he found Owens' taking of Hoffman's home county interesting.

"This used to be a tremendous conservative center, this whole North Country area," Martin said. "You couldn't find a Democrat in this whole area. ... And of course, all that's changed. ... It's kind of like what Vermont went through.

"I think there are a lot of thinking people up here, and maybe they figured it was time for a change somewhere along the line."

Hoffman had said he would move to Saranac Lake, most of which is inside the 23rd District, if elected, and even bought a house on Riverside Drive. Lake Placid, where Hoffman lives, is in the 20th District represented by Glens Falls Democrat Scott Murphy, who was chosen in a special election earlier this year.

Fox doesn't have to say anything about it because Obama doesn't want anyone to look back. They aren't in the business of slinging mud at themselves, and with so many top ranking Democrats like Schumer, Franks, Hoyer, and Rangel, asleep at the switch or taking advantage of the situation, Obama has erred on the side of organized crime. Many Dem scam artists have been promoting public healthcare, to build societal capital so America will forgive them for their past criminal acts. When I listen to Hoyer and Rockefeller, I don't hear champions of we the people, I hear pandering politicians who are franticly trying to make us forget that they are personally responsible for not contesting the lies for war and torture, and allowing the blatant thievery that has forced us to the verge of National bankruptcy. They're co-dependants, that's why neither Fox nor Obama want to talk about it. They both hope we're too stupid to know any better.

DW-

I know first hand that being gay is not a choice.....no one would make the choice to be different than everyone else, especially when they are young. You and my parents should meet. You'd get along great.

Obama could very easily enfold the teabagging base of Rush and Beck, by treating Wall Street thieves and tax cheating Rangel types like the criminals they are. Teabaggers come from a class of American citizen who are subject to the laws of America. If Democrats prosecuted educated fortunates like they have a doobie in their pockets, with no regard for party affiliation, they could avoid the mistake Carter made. Uneducated Reagen supporters and teabaggers, need the protections provided by the Constitution. When Carter decided to not look back regarding Watergate, he lost the Blue Dog rank and file Democrats who get arrested for the flimsiest excuse. Obama is following them off the same cliff. If he keeps making excuses and providing cover for the investor class, while Americans are used as job security for the GOP dominated prison industrial complex, the right will use this fact as a recruitment tool for teabaggers. Carter turned a blind eye and paid dearly. Next?

If you don't think Faux news is a propaganda arm of the republican party, two weeks ago the national republican party put out a press release with talking points against a new stimulus package in the works. Faux had put up a series of graphics on the "news" about the details new stimulus bill, complete with the same typos as the republican press release, with no citation that they were just regurgitating the press release. Why does faux news get so many viewers? Because they are entertainment and cater to the couch potato demographic.

I watch Fox News Sunday every week. They've been providing political talking points to the ridiculous right for years, so I try to take notes and and pre-emptively create counter talking points for later in the week. Local dittoheads invariably regurgitate the Fox Party line. As a matter of fact, the talking points being used by these zealots of zionism, are almost word for word what I was writing about Bush and his Congress 4 years ago. I was writing about the 600 detention centers when they were being built by BushCo and Halliburton on Conyersblog 3 years ago. Beck and Rush called us left wingnut conspiracy theorists, until we took back Congress and the White house. Now, the detention centers Halliburton and KBR created to house disgruntled left wingers, can be used to imprison home grown McVeigh style right wingers, or Olympic bombing terrorists too. I heard Ft. Drum has 2 of them. One for detained families, one for rogue lone wolf terrorists. Isn't Palin going rogue?

DW: I think the Fox message has been adequately challenged by the voters of this region, who for the first time since 1853 have shifted a bit to the left. Our neighbors miraculously voted for Obama, Gillibrand, Murphy, and Owens. If this were the world series, the democrats would have swept in four. The conservatives tried to shift strategies by going to the far right and discovered, even in the ultra-conservative 23rd, that the anti-choice, anti gay marriage, anti government stance no longer cuts it in the 21st century. If you watch Fox "news," you're going to believe that your views are somehow correct. They run a huge business off of that perspective, but I think it will clearly be the downfall of the GOP. Just ask the voters.

My last comment on the subject of gay marriage:

1 - I don't care what the underlying cause is, but I don't believe it's a choice. I have seen the traits in 7 and 8 year olds who grew up to be gay and I doubt a 7 year old makes a decision to follow a life style that will subject him to ridicule, persecution, discrimination and the threat of physical bodily harm or murder.

2 - I don't care what you call it. Marriage or civil union, just give them the rights they want. If one partner circumvents that with a health care proxy or living will, so what, that's life.

I know many gay people and have gay friends. They work, own homes, pay taxes, volunteer in the community, root for their favorite team and they don't go around telling people how to live their life. If they offend someone's religious beliefs, those people should leave it up their god to settle matters on judgment day. I voted for Owens. Sun's shining, every one have a good day.

Happy, your liberal trick of attacking the messenger when you can't challenge the message is getting old and time worn. Isn’t it time to update your strategy? As far as Fox goes, if Obama’s Whitehouse is attacking it then they aren’t playing along with the official line like NBC, NPR and CNN. Look at the ratings and see for yourself which news source has the highest ratings. When you attack me for watching Fox you are also attacking all your neighbors who watch Fox.

Way to go DW. First you cut and paste from FOX (always a sign of intelligence), then you compare children raking leaves to complex tax laws and government systems...you're losing us here.

Doug Hoffman and Sarah Palin share your vision for America. So do the talking heads at FOX. Do some research on the average FOX viewer and see who you're hanging with. It's interesting.

grizzly read "Answers to Your Questions for a Better Understanding of Sexual Orientation & Homosexuality" from the APA, no not Adirondack Park Agency, the American Psychological Association. It reverses the APA's statement in 1998: "There is considerable recent evidence to suggest that biology, including genetic or inborn hormonal factors, play a significant role in a person's sexuality."

DW- do you really think being gay is a choice?!?!

Really? If so, then try being gay. Seriously DW, go be gay for a day. Exactly. If you are not gay, you are not gay. There is no way you can look at a dude and think "I wanna hit that". Its not a choice. You can only choose to ignore it and live a straight life, like so many of our fine republican politicians and conservative Christian church leaders.

Happy, if you want my point of view try this. I believe that tax penalties between relatives, brother-sister, parent adult child or cousins, should be eased. I can think of several instances in the Tri-Lakes where relatives are forced to live together out of economic reasons. In these cases their income should be reported as a “family”. I find these tax “penalties” more discriminatory then not allowing gays to marry. You can’t choose your relatives but, you choose to be Gay.

Perhaps we should do what they do in other countries regarding marriage - 1st everyone is joined in a civil ceremony and then if the couple so chooses, they marry in a religious ceremony. I don't know why everyone is so focused on this anyway as Owens opposes gay marriage (but is for a civil union). Also, what are you talking about re: losing our shirts with the Dems - Reagan, Bush, Bush II all spent way over budget and increased our national debt by millions and trillions. Who spent more that NYS could afford and taxed (assessed fees) more than George Pataki?
