Catholic school principal charged with DWI
By NATHAN BROWN, Enterprise Staff WriterSARANAC LAKE - The principal of the Tri-Lakes area's two Catholic elementary schools has been charged with driving with a blood-alcohol content over twice the legal limit.
Village police said they received a civilian complaint about a green Toyota RAV4 driving erratically on River Street, operating all over the roadway, onto the sidewalk and almost striking another vehicle. Police stopped the vehicle on Lake Street and arrested Anne L. Bayruns, 44, of Saranac Lake at 4:52 p.m. Monday and charged her with driving while intoxicated as well as aggravated DWI, both misdemeanors.
Police wouldn't release her blood-alcohol content; however, aggravated DWI means that it would, allegedly, have been over .18.
Bayruns took over as principal of St. Bernard's, in Saranac Lake, last year and as principal of St. Agnes, in Lake Placid, in April.
Bayruns told the Enterprise Monday evening she had a few drinks but didn't think she was intoxicated.
"I think I was fine," Bayruns said. "I didn't feel like I was (intoxicated) at all."
She declined further comment.
Any decisions about a Catholic school principal's employment are made at the parish level, Sr. Jennifer Votraw, spokeswoman for the Diocese of Ogdensburg, said this morning. Although the pastors could turn to the diocese for advice, she said, the diocese doesn't "get directly involved unless there's a reason," and hiring a principal is the pastor's decision, with input from the school board.
"School boards are consultative but not definitive," Votraw said.
As for this case, Votraw said, "I imagine the pastor would (consult) with diocesan officials. It's a local decision unless it gets to the point where, locally, it's not being handled, or (is) passed on."
The Rev. Tom Kornmeyer, pastor of St. Bernard's Church, declined comment, and the Rev. Joseph Morgan, pastor of St. Agnes, could not immediately be reached this morning.

She's not employed at the DA's office, so I don't know why the DA would have anything to say about her returning to work Monday. Your suggestion that people who get DWIs shouldn't be able to work is a real great idea.

I am completely and utterly appalled. Isn't she supposed to be the moral compass of two Catholic elementary schools? I guess the only thing she is capable of doing in "two's" is driving with a blood-alcohol content over TWICE the legal limit. At one point in time those schools thrived, but now that Bayruns has been calling the shots (or should I say drinking the shots?) they are going to crumble.

Perhaps Tupper's abandoned cat-leash law should be applied in SL to Catholic School Principals? Must be on leash when outside?

I did read Broken Bench, and even brought a copy of it to my local bus driver/town justice, after reading the part where Derek Champagne was quoted as saying the people responsible for all the unconstitutional activity, were town justice/bus drivers. Mr. Glaberston isn't the only writer getting awards for writing about North Country Just-Us, a guy down in Glens Falls won a Pulitzer Prize for doing the same thing, from a little different angle. The facts are in and a pattern has been established, on a national level. My biggest surprise? The police actually arrested her. Last year she would have been given a North Country Medal of Freedom Award, and an escort home with sirens blaring.

amraksays....YOU are the one going off on rants about the system ....Broken Bench !! Broken Bench!!....Broken record. If you dont like the system...run for public office and change it. You are not doing much else as you try to run your empire from your studio apt overlooking the tire store in SL. My post have been filled with facts and opinions ABOUT THE STORY. Yours have been rants about your paranoid delusions. Since you are obviously more educated than the people that wrote the contitution and the NYS laws please enlighten the rest of the world....or better yet...double your dose and go watch a test pattern on your TV until the second coming.

I've known many Tri-Lakes old boy "professionals", who would be eligible for DWI's any time they are seen driving after 2:00 PM...on any given day. Considering this happened at 4:52 on a work day, my guess is that she wasn't the only educator driving with a buzz on Monday. I had a high school English teacher who had a bottle in her desk in 1973, but she was an Auschwitz survivor and had the tatoo to prove. I don't have quite as much sympathy for Ms. Bayruns.

Sounds to me people have to much time on there hands. There are bigger things in this world to be concerned about. I understand she is a principal of two Catholic schools but she is also human. I have know tolerance for drunk drivers as I have lost friends to them. I just think a little support for Anne would be better than tearing her apart. We all have bad days, she made a bad choice, it doesnt make her the bad.

contrary1....second DWI is only a felony if you are convicted on the DWI the first time. If the first DWI arrest ends up getting plead out to a DWAI....another DWI arrest within ten years is still a Misd. There must be a DWI conviction of the first charge.

A second DWI within 10 years is a felony, whether it was aggravated DWI or not. Ask your buddy John Sweeney about that one. This Republican Stop-DWI specialist was convicted in 2007, and is now facing felony charges for doing it again. How can anyone move forward from the many police department scandals, when the person who was implicated in an alleged DWI accident in a police car, was also implicated in a home invasion where he allegedly beat up a citizen in his own home, and is presently setting the standards by which all other officers behave? You want the police corruption discussion to stop? Stop hiring police chiefs with such obvious defects. The pattern has been established. Until honest citizens regain faith in the police, the corruption discussion will have to continue. The culture of corruption began in small town America, long before it became successful in Washington. It needs to end here, so DC gets the message.
