Two injured in car-bike accidents

By CHRIS KNIGHT and PETER CROWLEY Enterprise Staff
POSTED: July 25, 2009

LAKE PLACID - Two cyclists were sent to the Lake Placid hospital after a pair of car-bike collisions that took place as numerous cyclists and runners train on local roads for Sunday's Ironman triathlon

The latest collision occurred around 12:15 p.m. Friday in front of Howard Johnson's restaurant in Lake Placid.

Another bicyclist was taken to the hospital after a reported hit-and-run collision Thursday afternoon in the town of Keene.

Lake Placid

collision Friday

Marcia Walton, 59, of Lake Placid, was driving her pickup truck across Saranac Avenue from a convenience store parking lot into the Howard Johnson's parking lot when cyclist Christian Caswell, 36, of Barrie, Ontario, struck the truck's side rear quarterpanel, according to a state trooper and Walton.

Trooper Frank Whitelaw said Caswell sufferred bruises and scrapes, complained of back pain and was taken to Adirondack Medical Center in Lake Placid, where his condition was not immediately available.

Whitelaw said Walton failed to observe the group of cyclists Caswell was in when she pulled out. She said she did see them but that they were about 200 yards behind the oncoming vehicles, which she said were far enough back for her to pull out safely.

"I had plenty of time to come across, but apparently the bicycles ... were coming a great deal faster than the vehicles were," Walton said. "One of them hit the back of my truck. I didn't hit him; he hit me. I understand he's all right, which I'm very grateful for."

Walton was not ticketed at the scene, but Whitelaw said she will be, for failure to yield the right of way. Told of this by the Enterprise, Walton said she was "astounded."

"I was there for two hours after the accident, and at no time did they say anything to me about ticketing me," Walton said.

Whitelaw said Caswell was riding with a friend who was competing in Sunday's Ironman. Caswell was reportedly training for a different Ironman event next month.

Keene collision

State police said they received a call from Essex County 911 reporting a hit-and-run personal-injury collision between a car and a cyclist around 1:20 p.m. Thursday. The incident took place near Alstead Hill, but no additional information was available from police as of press time.

Fire and rescue personnel from Keene and Keene Valley were called to the scene, according to Keene Valley volunteer firefighter Ron Konowitz.

He said a female bicyclist riding down the hill with a group of people suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Adirondack Medical Center in Lake Placid.

"I just came down to help out when I heard 'car versus bike,'" he said. "She was scraped up, and we took her to the hospital."

Konowitz didn't know if the bicyclist had been hit by a vehicle, but he said troopers were talking to people inside a truck and a car that had pulled over along the road.

Apart from the two collisions, Whitelaw said state police have had a lot of near-misses between cars and bicycles and a lot of complaints in the Lake Placid area. The complaints have been made by motorists reporting bicyclists riding more than two abreast in the road and not yielding to vehicle traffic, Whitelaw said.

Who is st joe, from waterworld?

sorry dude but you do need a good shirnk. You are the poster child for whats wrong in this country.

I believe in 24 hours bottle to throttle. The whole .08 game is bs. You sound as if you have experience either personally or your part of the machine that is just maggots on society.

I take little comfort in knowing your miserable attitude will/does lead to your miserable life.

it's a beautiful day

Jim McKenna just secured the Ironman for another 3 years. I bet he dresses in his best Marie Antoinnette costume at Holloween, and tells you all to go eat cake. Why should he care? He ain't elected.

Remember when the ECAC Hockey Championship were held at the Olympic Center? That was a family event that lasted 4 days and actually made a financial/economic impact on the community. (held in late March as ski season declined) It was a combination of locals and out of towners who attended and was in-keeping with the winter sports tradition of the area. Its events like that we need to bring back to the area.

yes i am another fine graduate of lake placid high school. i hope they really try too teach the kids now. but that's off topic i would be nice if some of the ironman/whatever`sevents money really went into lake placid area or it`s people instead the outside corp who mostly don`t live here who will take the money an run and never put anything back.into lake placid they are not force too but they expect us to pay for there bike trails and other pet project that have no true benefit to the people who live here. a high percentile of locals will never make use of themselves.it all for the outsiders to make the too rich richer. i wonder how many hotels and restaurant and shops in this town are owned by locals anymore . the owners don`t live here so they don`t care and the ones still here are getting price out of business. look at the empty shops and stores. i wonder how much of the money made from this ironman will still be in lake placid next week

people need to realize events like ironman are what built and continues to sustain the economy in this area. it's only one day a year so i make it a point to enjoy it. i understand the weeks leading up to the ironman*****because there are some of them training who think they own the road. that situation should be fixed, but otherwise i think it's a great event. thanks also to the police and volunteers who put in much more than a full days work.

the local biker are no better then ironmam .they run stop signs all the time i almost hit them come out of riverside drive before act like the car traffic wasn`t there .they were having one of there illegal bike race on the pubic streets, it is illegal to race on pubic streets without permits, just like it is for car racing he same laws apply. and too the local biker who has five cars all lic and insured why should your bikes be any different . they have a higher liability to the pubic road safety .and are a hazard to pubic safty
