As the economy changes worldwide and affects our downtown businesses, we need to change. The good news is, we are innovative and flexible enough to survive the storm.
With a majority of "ma and pa" businesses, we need to take an aggressive and creative approach to attracting customers through our doors. We applaud the Lake Placid businesses for developing a package that attracts locals and visitors with "Holiday Village Stroll Weekend." This event takes place Dec. 5-7 to encourage shoppers early with a litany of enticements that are impossible to ignore. Free skating, movie matinee, wine and food samplings, live music, later store hours, Santa's arrival and hotel packages that are full of incentives are just part of the weekend's schedule.
The Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce has also done a wonderful job of revamping events in the village and adding several new ones such as the antique car show, which was held every Friday this summer. We applaud their efforts to bring visitors into the village, excite locals about new events in the business district and generally work with and support their member businesses.
With high taxes, we should support our local businesses. After all, they have supported our communities by donating to local fundraisers, employing people, offering health coverage and stimulating our Tri-Lakes economy with their investment and customer service. So before you go shopping online or out of the area, we ask you to support your friends, neighbors and relatives who make a living from businesses in this area.
What goes around comes around, and it will. Let's choose our own destiny by controlling what we can control and supporting our local economy.
