Amen, Hidebound. Ditch the daffodil monoculture. Move the soapbox derby event to the first weekend in May, call it Derby Day. Pretend we can grow mint this time of year for juleps.

The derby is today (Saturday) Not today (Friday) as published. Just one of those 'attention to detail' things that should be a given from a paper.

I am not a fan of planting ornamental flowers, non-native to the Adirondacks. I am sure Cherie Sayles's intentions are the best. But the selection of the daffodil (Narcissus) to form an event around?It does not represent or tie-in to any local theme or "branding"-a monochromatic, ornamental flower, not native to the Adirondack. Think about that for a minute. Daffodils already have identification with the Cancer Society.No one sees daffodils and thinks of the Adirondacks nor should they. A flower, especially one with the attributes of the daffodil - narcissism and vanity; poisonous to horses, dogs, cats; skin irritant sometimes used to remove warts.. For 2015, consider a slight re-naming- Daft-Fest. Keep the soap box derby - ditch the daffodil. End of winter, early spring, cabin fever blowout, complete with a competitors Helmet Decorating Contest, Best overall Derby Daft-Fest Outfit, Blueline Drafts for Dafts (participants age requirement), Daft-Fest band competition, Daft-Fe
