Olympic return a long shot, but miracles do happen here

February 8, 2014

Ever since the 1932 Olympic Winter Games ended, there was hope that Lake Placid would host another Olympics....

It's too bad the Olympics have become these over the top events and are not scaled back. In my opinion, the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics were the quintessential Olympics: charming, small town warm, and frankly, the Olympics remembered the most--and NOT just because of the Miracle on Ice. Too bad that can't return to this wonderful winter town because of commercialization of the games. My family visits the Lake Placid area about every other year, and we love our visits to your community. I feel it is our home away from home; a place that makes me very happy. From what locals have told me over the years, the 1980 event was not easy and people didn't always like the world looking in. I can understand that. When you have a good thing, it's hard to share it with so many others. I wish Lake Placid would host again. You're one of my favorite places on earth. Please continue to keep it small town warm.

Locally, I no longer think the "Cats" are fat enough.

That was then, this is now. Look at the scale of it now, it won't work here. Of course it doesn't matter what you or I want. If fat cats who stand to make obscene profits from government contracts throw enough graft around it could happen, but only if their bribes are bigger than those elsewhere.

The 1980 Olympics was an economic bonanza for us as much of our regional infrastructure was upgraded or created just for the 1980 Olympics, e.g., Regional Airport, sports venues, prisons, etc. Though the event has outgrown our region's capacity, a scaled-back, more appropriately sized, Winter Olympics would be great for us. So to Wondering: "More 'tragedy' please!" We will handle it just fine in our own unique Adirondack way!

Returning the Olympics here would be a tragedy more than a miracle.
