Ridiculous waste in federal budget

December 27, 2013

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has released his annual “Wastebook,” giving us all a window into the positively absurd ways in which the federal government spends the hard-earned tax dollars we give it....

"Coburn's list included 100 items of federal spending totaling $30 billion."

Gee, only $30 billion, total? The fabulous Tea Party government shutdown cost $24 billion all by itself. Why isn't it at the top of Coburn's list? And the 44 failed house votes to kill Obamacare cost somewhere north of $60 million; surely that waste should have made the list.

That should've been "in the country."

I don't see what's so ridiculous about tax breaks for brothels. Every other type of business in none country gets to write off all kinds of costs through the myriad deductions in the tax code. Why should brothels be treated different? I'll bet those brothels paid more in taxes last year than a lot of corporations did. The only real solution is to get rid of all the deductions and go to a simpler system with lower but fixed rates.

Jim - as I said - spending on sending a human to mars may be a huge waste of money. Certainly in retrospect invading Iraq was a waste of about a trillion dollars.

Peter, you have never seen government spending you disagree with have you? We are broke maybe you missed that memo. The real waste is in duplicate government programs that cost us at least 100 billion per year. Ironically I bet your not that way with your personal money.

It is reasonable to question whether sending men or women to Mars is a waste of tax-payer money. But that isn't what Mr Coburn or whoever wrote this editorial is doing. This is self-serving intellectually dishonest cherry picking.

Who wrote thus dumb editorial? Ask yourself why these grants were given out in the first place. They were given in good faith for a valid purpose by sensible people. I have sat on the NASA grant review panels. The proposals are evaluated carefully and responsibly. No one wants to waste taxpayer money. Lots of things can be described in a way that sounds silly. People write these type of editorials all the time. They are cheap shots.

if he printed a complete list of grants it would fill the newspaper up for weeks.grants are not a good way to go. they take away our money and then hire a bunch of people to dole it out to us a little at a time.he who hires the best grant writers gets the money....locally i know of a lot of grants that were wasted...a new state of the art police boat that would be used only on lake even has a lighted remains in dry dock due to misuse and can only be used with village board approval.......the rebuilding and resurfacing on what used to be part of dorsey st.there is one house there....a huge stone wall had to rebuilt there.i've heard the lame excuse we need the rd for emergency access from the lapan hiway to petrova bunk, as there are permanently installed barricades there......this letter could go on and on but it's not worth the effort the real problem here is that people just shrug it off and say "what do you do?"........****placency is the problem.

Here is a question for ya, Pete. What are the Tri-Lakes/Franklin Cty/Hamilton Cty going to do when Sunmount closes in five years? Also, I would like to know what "grants" are useful and wasteful in yours and your poster's viewpoints. If you publicized a complete list of grants this year, we could comment on what is good and not good.
