Change, of course, but don’t count out hope
This was billed from the beginning as an uncertain, probably tough year. It mostly lived up to that hype. We knew many things would change this year, and some of the biggest changes had been distinct possibilities before — mostly bad, like the closing of the Camp Gabriels prison and the decrepit Crown Point Bridge. There were also some big surprises, like the turnover of both of the North Country’s representatives in Congress. “Change” was one of new President Barack Obama’s major campaign buzzwords in 2008; so was “hope.” Change was a given, but hope is more elusive. That’s evident from recent polls in which most Americans said they think the country is going in the wrong direction (even though most also support the president in general).
