LAKE PLACID — The third time proved to be the charm for Tereza Macel, and a first visit to the Adirondacks was just as rewarding for Maik Twelsiek, as the pair captured victories in the women’s and men’s pro divisions in Sunday’s Ford Ironman Lake Placid Triathlon. As a first-time competitor in Lake Placid, Twelsiek, who hails from Germany, finished in first place in the men’s division more than 20 minutes ahead of the next-closest pro triathlete. And Macel, who lives in Canada but represents the Czech Republic, followed by breaking through with a win after two unsuccessful appearances in previous Ironman races in Lake Placid. An illness in late June turned out to be a blessing for the 29-year-old Twelsiek, who would have competed earlier this month at a Frankfurt, Germany, Ironman race instead of coming to the Olympic Village. Although he was the third male pro to emerge from Mirror Lake in the Ironman’s 2.
