Daffest planning in full swing

SARANAC LAKE — Around this time next year, Saranac Lake should be covered in 1 million daffodils and gearing up for a flower festival. Organizers of the new Daffest plan a massive planting in September and a festival in May 2011. The “bloomin’ developers” from the Women’s Civic Chamber will soon be going door to door in Saranac Lake’s neighborhoods, looking for “petal pushers” on every block to help sell bulbs. Saranac Lake has been divided into 31 districts, and each will have its own “chief bloom” to oversee the petal pushers. Daffodils grow from bulbs and will keep coming up every year. The festival’s organizers said they hope it will turn into an annual event, bringing tourists to Saranac Lake during what is often a slow time of year. “The best part is, all we have to do is work hard this year,” said Liz Murray, with the Women’s Civic Chamber. “Year after year, (the daffodils) come up by themselves.
