SARANAC LAKE — With a solid group of returning players and a number of steadily-evolving newcomers, the Saranac Lake baseball team expects to turn in an impressive showing in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference this season.

Red Storm head coach Ron Burke is also happy to have a group of athletes who can rotate positions on the field when necessary.

“I haven’t ever seen a team quite like this, as far as chemistry,” said Burke, who has coached the varsity squad for five years. “The guys have been working their tails off.”

Burke has several players he can look to for a solid performance on the mound.

Nick Fortune is a strong pitcher and Burke said the senior will also split time between outfield and first base.

Senior Dan Drake is another one of the Red Storm’s go-to guys for pitching and will also be playing shortstop.

Returning to the lineup for 2008 is senior Chris Melville, who will start in the outfield.
