Trudeau Institute adding new wing

SARANAC LAKE — Construction of the Trudeau Institute’s Ronald B. Stafford Wing is well under way. Dynamite was used to blast away space behind the existing building, creating a cavernous hole bound by rock ledge on one side and the world-renowned laboratories on the other. The three-story, 10,000-square-foot addition, named after the late state senator, will provide improved research space to replace some of the aging spaces in the original 1963 wing. According to Nelson Pleau, vice president and chief operating officer at the Trudeau Institute, the new space will be used by all the existing scientists and Trudeau is also recruiting new scientists. The nearly $10 million wing, being paid for by both state and federal funding as well as gifts and matching funds from Trudeau, has been designed by CUH2A architects and constructed by Gilbane Construction, both companies that specialize in technological spaces. “Current state-of-the-art research facilities require heavy HVAC (heati
