NEW YORK (AP) — Hurricane Earl has lost some of its punch, yet the storm is threatening to disrupt the holiday weekend on Long Island, with some train and ferry service halted and beaches and campgrounds closed.
The eastern end of Long Island was under a tropical storm warning early Friday. Earl, a Category 2 storm, was expected to pass between 100 and 200 miles southeast of Montauk late Friday packing wind gusts as high as 55 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Pounding surf, minor to moderate beach erosion and rip currents were forecast, before the storm was expected to ease after midnight.
How big an impact Earl will have on holiday travel isn't clear, yet.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey expects nearly 3 million travelers to pass through its airports, bridges, tunnels and rail system over Labor Day weekend.
