Mencken would love ‘The Daily Show’
To the editor: H.L. Mencken, a sharp-witted journalist and perceptive social critic, once described our politics as a “Carnival of Buncome,” the latter word translated as hokum or insincere talk. Many citizens surely would agree with this jaundiced assessment of the nation’s civic sport. Not even Mencken, however, could foresee how the effect of modern electronic technology, with its talking heads, spinmeisters and Internet bloggers, tend to confirm his cynical view of American politics. With the carefully choreographed conventions of both major parties scheduled this month, the political rhetoric is heating up and steadily attracting public interest. On the Democratic side stands Chicago’s charismatic celebrity champion of uncharted change.
