They are in denial
November 21, 2008 - John Stack
The news yesterday was that the Saranac Lake school had settled their contract with the teachers. Specifics are 3.95% per year increase with health insurance costin 375 or 750 depending on single or family. I can't think of a more generous contractor salary package being given out anywhere right now. 4 percent per year? Thats good in the BEST of times! $750 a year for insurance? Unbelievable. Supr Goldman made the ridiculous remarks :
"Even though it appears to some to be insufficient, frequently the negotiations are guided by the contracts that have been negotiated in comparable school districts," Goldman said. "I think you would find that, on the issues of wages and health insurance, we are probably in a very favorable position."
Should someone clue in this school board we are in a recession/ depression? Unemployment is through the roof. Costs for everything are through the roof, and SLCS hands out an exhorbitantly generous package? I really don't care what other schools here are doing. We taxpayers can't afford this! Why let Tupper or wherever define our contract? Tell the teacher's union' We ain't got the money!'. If other schools are paying LESS than SLCS, they should not be EMULATED! Why can't we be the ones to take a stand? Are we going to have an exodus of teacher's to Ausable? I really don't think so.
I also do think on the whole, we have great teachers here in Saranac Lake. Many in administration, guidance and teachers have been fantastic when I have needed to work with them. But, teachers aren't that special. They choose this life, and as far as I can tell, love the job, and would do it over almost anything else. But, don't give me sob stories about all these teachers helping out after school and whatnot. There are 5 community members volunteering for free around here for every teacher, and they don't whine and ask to be compensated for it.
Oh, and the average salary for SLCS in 2006-2007 was 47,800 during the 2006-07 school year.
Oh, and I'm not complaining because I want better salry and bennies. I am a state worker. I have great benefits (200 a month for family insurance) a good salary, good working conditions, and a good contract. If my contract needs ro be reopened, I say 'Go right ahead'. I can sit here and refuse, but without some major cuts, I'm losing staff that work for me. That is what WILL happen in Saranac Lake. If our state gov doesn't cut this school year, next years is going to be incredible. Mark my words, next year, SLCS will be coming to us and saying 'we need to raise the levy 20% because of cuts from the State. Bull. There will be some because of that, but this contract is what will really be behind a big portion of the increase.
