George's medal haul

February 21, 2014 - Chris Knight
One U.S. athlete has worn two Olympic medals at this games, but you haven't heard about it.

He was there for the opening ceremonies. He's been hounded by the Sochi media paparazzi. He's done the definitive Bob Costas interview. He's had silver and bronze medals around his neck.

Who is this superstar?

He's Curious George.

That's right, Curious George.

Everybody's favorite little red-shirted monkey has been all over these games, courtesy of Saranac Lake's own Doug Haney.

The chief alpine press officer for the U.S. Ski Team brought his daughter Gwen's stuffed Curious George to Sochi and has taken pictures of him with athletes, at venues and, yes, wearing the medals of two U.S. alpine skiers: Andrew Weibrecht and Julia Mancuso. He's been posting the photos on Facebook for his daughter, and plenty of other people including my kids, to follow back home.

Here's a few samples:

My favorite. The Costas interview.

This actually started last year when Doug left to head out on the World Cup circuit. This is his account of how it went down.

"Gwen was jumping on the bed. I was packing. It’s a pretty familiar scene at the Haney house. She stopped and sat on the edge of the bed. 'Daddy, Georgie wants to go, she said, handing me her stuffed monkey.

"'OK,' I said. 'But he can’t just go on the spa tour. He’s going to have to help me work.'

"Picture a 2.5 year-old serious face. 'He’s ready to work,' she said.

"Since Soelden, I’ve been traveling the World Cup with Curious George…who does find his way into trouble from time to time, but always logically works his way out of it."

George is definitely going to have some stories to tell when he gets back home.

I bet George frustrated Costas and the rest of the interviewers by being so tight-lipped. I mean, he doesn't even appear to have a mouth.
