Lawsuit stalling more than the project
May 20, 2013 - Jessica Collier
The news about the judge ruling in favor of Protect and the Sierra Club this morning reminded me of something else I wanted to post about last week.
In a story about potentially reviving the Loon Lake golf course last week, Chris Knight wrote about how APA board members wanted to talk about some lessons they learned during the ACR process, but they can't do that with the lawsuit ongoing.
"I guess that's what I'm getting at that is there are some lessons we'd like to have learned from ACR that I wish we could reflect on, because this is the first large subdivision I've seen coming down since," APA Commissioner Sherman Craig is quoted in the story as saying.
That must be frustrating.
Another thing I meant to post about a while ago and I just remembered now:
John Caffry and Bob Glennon gave a talk in the Albany area about the ACR.
Here's the info from the event, as listed on the Post-Star's website: lecture -- Sprawl on Steroids in the Adirondacks
Event occured on Thu, Mar 28 2013, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EDT
On March 20, 2012, the Sierra Club, and Protect the Adirondacks!, filed a lawsuit in state court to challenge the Adirondack Park Agency's approval of a 6,000 acre mega-resort in the heart of the Adirondack Park, near the hamlet of Tupper Lake. It is the largest development proposal of its kind in the Adirondacks. The Adirondack Park Agency, the state agency created to protect the "natural, scenic, aesthetic, ecological, wildlife, recreational, or open space resources of the Park," in a flawed decision, approved the development without requiring the developer to conduct even a minimally adequate wildlife impact assessment, and violated its own regulations concerning appropriate use of 'resource management' classified open space lands. The attorneys in the case will give us a slide presentation of the development project, and will discuss the status of the lawsuit.
PRESENTERS: John Caffry of Caffry & Flower, lead attorney; and Bob Glennon, former Executive Director of the Adirondack Park Agency.
Venue: William K Sanford Town Library 629 Albany Shaker Road Loudonville, NY 12211
I'm disappointed I didn't know about it ahead of time. I might have gone to check it out. I could have stopped by my alma mater, Siena, down the road.
