Hassig says he was arrested - again
October 24, 2012 - Chris Morris
This just came to me via email from Don Hassig, who will be on the Green Party line in the race for New York's 21st Congressional District:
NY-21 Congressional Candidate Hassig Arrested for Handing Out Cancer Prevention Materials Inside Massena Memorial Hospital
On the morning of October 24, 2012, I went to the Massena Memorial Hospital to conduct educational outreach on the subject of breast carcinogen exposure minimization. The Massena Memorial Hospital is owned by the Town of Massena. Thus, it is a public place. Public places are freedom of speech places. I chose to do this because of three things: (1) determination to educate St. Lawrence River Valley residents about PCBs and other breast carcinogens; (2) love of freedom of speech; and (3) determination to confront corporations and government on their deceptions regarding breast cancer education. Publicly owned hospitals are the perfect places to satisfy all of these driving forces.
I stood in the main entrance waiting area and offered a flyer and a pamphlet on the subject of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) exposure minimization to those who entered the hospital. Some of the people I spoke to were quick to accept the literature and expressed gratitude that I was providing it. Others behaved as if the subject of chemicals causing cancer was taboo. They rejected my offer of the educational materials in a strangely intense way. It was clear that they had a negative attitude toward environmental health protection activism.
After approximately one half hour, I was approached by Mark Brouillette, the Director of Ancillary Services at the Massena Memorial Hospital. He stated that he wanted me to stop my educational endeavor. I stated that I was doing what was needed considering the failure of the governmental public health entities to provide educational outreach on the subject of breast carcinogen exposure minimization. Mr. Brouillette suggested that I go outside and hand out my literature. I replied that I wanted to be inside so as to avoid breathing the exhaust that was present in the parking lot and that I wanted to be inside because this was a place of honor. Inside is where the hospital does its educational outreach. Inside is where all legitimate educational outreach takes place. He left. Soon he returned and requested that I come outside to speak with him. I agreed to do this. He then requested that I go to the sidewalk along a Village of Massena street that ran past the hospital to do my educational work. I stated that I did not want to do my educational work there because there was nobody walking along that sidewalk. I then observed that Village of Massena Police had arrived. I went back into the hospital and set about continuing my educational work. The police consulted with Mr. Brouillette for a few minutes, then they all came into the hospital. Massena Police Chief Currier explained that I was trespassing since I refused to leave the hospital. I explained that the Constitution trumps all laws and regulations in the United States (US). The Constitution guarantees freedom of speech to US citizens and I was exercising my freedom of speech in a public place. I explained that the Massena Memorial Hospital was owned by the Town of Massena, which meant that it was a public place. Public places are the places where Americans are free to speak.
I chose to refuse to leave the hospital when the police gave me an unlawful order to leave. Their order to leave was unlawful because it was violating my freedom of speech. I was arrested by the police for making this choice. It was an unlawful arrest. The Village of Massena Police could have given me an appearance ticket. They chose to handcuff me and confine me in the police station until the time of the Massena Village Court session. I was thus robbed of several hours of my freedom. The Massena Village Police chose to do this because it was a way of giving me a bad time for standing up to them. Nevertheless, the officers were quite reasonable and decent. When I requested to have the handcuffs loosened so that they were not cutting into my wrists, they loosened the handcuffs. When I asked questions about the steps required to regain my freedom, they answered my questions.
I chose to conduct educational outreach on the subject of breast carcinogen exposure minimization at the Massena Memorial Hospital to confront the evil US government on its deliberate deceptions concerning breast cancer education. The US government avoids educating on the subject of breast carcinogen exposure minimization because the corporations that have poisoned the world with breast carcinogens do not want the government warning people about the cancer risk imposed by this poisoning. The corporations use the government to create the illusion that there is no scientific knowledge on the subject of breast carcinogen exposure cancer risk. Government attempts to do this by leaving breast carcinogens out of the messages that it uses to address breast cancer. Government education pieces on breast cancer focus on early detection via screening and make recommendations that do not include minimizing exposure to breast carcinogens.
Industrial chemicals that are known by scientists to be breast carcinogens include: PCBs, dioxins, all persistent organic pollutants (POPs), cadmium and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The government must begin to address breast carcinogen exposure minimization in its educational outreach.
