APA questions Big Tupper plans

June 3, 2011 - Jessica Collier
I'm going to post this story from today's paper here, because it's short and I've already gotten some reactions to it:

APA questions Big Tupper plans

TUPPER LAKE - Why aren't Adirondack Club and Resort developers making the overhaul of the Big Tupper Ski Area their first priority once they get permits in place?

That's what state Adirondack Park Agency attorney Paul Van Cott asked expert witnesses for the project's developers Wednesday.

He asked why, when it's been made clear that the community's number one interest in the project is to make the ski area viable, project developers Preserve Associates are not investing in that section of the development right away.

Jim Martin, economic specialist for the consulting firm the LA Group, said the plan is to put money into overhauling the former McDonald's Marina in the first few years, since it's totally defunct and falling apart.

But since local economic advocacy group Adirondack Residents Intent on Saving Their Economy used thousands of volunteer hours over the last two years to get the ski slope running again, the need to put money into that facility was not as great just yet, Martin said.

Major investment in the ski slope isn't planned until year three of the project's phasing, according to application materials Van Cott referenced.
