Maroun running for mayor on ACR platform

May 12, 2011 - Jessica Collier
Hey, what does everyone think of Paul Maroun running for mayor based on his concerns that the village is not supporting the ACR "110 percent"?

Here's a link to my story about it that ran yesterday.

Maroun says he knows that there are people in Tupper Lake who don't want the project. He also acknowledges that there are issues with it, especially with the PILOT as it's been proposed. But he said he genuinely believe the ACR would be the best thing for the town right now and has a chance of reviving the area, and he said all those problems can be worked out.

Mickey Desmarais said questioned Maroun's phrase "110 percent." The village has done all it possibly could to support the project, he said, and he hinted that any more support beyond what they've already done would be illegal.

Maroun also said he doesn't think the APA process will be finished by the time the election rolls around in November — not sure if he was referring to a potential lawsuit from either side arguing with whichever way the commissioners' decision goes, or if he just means he thinks a decision will just be delayed until then.

Either way, it should be an interesting next few months.
