Here comes Hillary
November 23, 2008 - John Stack
It looks like Hillary Clinton will become our next Secretary of State. Of all of Obama's appointments, this is probably the shrewdest, and at the same time, the best choice he's made. When it comes to world affairs, there are few that can carry the US torch like Clinton. No one can deny her expertise in foreign policy. Many of course disagree with Clinton on health care, taxes, and social policy. But, its hard to claim she would be a poor ambassador. Many in the world know Clinton, and have good relations and memories of her husband. This is why its a smart move.
Hillary will no longer be in the Senate. For Obama, this should be a relief. Hillary, although NYs junior senator, and something like 35th in seniority, she sure wields a lot of clout. If Obama wants to get his agenda pushed through, he would most likely have to go through Clinton. And that could get messy. As Secretary of State, she will be representing the US interests in foreign lands. I think she may take to the job, as running for 2 years for president, and losing, can burn you out a bit on Senate minutiae. I think its shrewd because he removes one of his possibly biggest headaches from the Senate, yet is able to make a great appointment.
The only seeming downside is 'who will take her seat in the Senate'? I don't even know who is on the short list. Its possible Andrew Cuomo gets the nod. I don't know. As much as Clinton may have been a carpetbagger, having her represent NY should didn't hurt New York.
