Truck rolls over on Route 73 in Keene
Roll over causes spill of tar, diesel
ST. HUBERTS — A tanker truck carrying asphalt emulsion rolled over on its side on state Route 73 in the Keene hamlet of St. Huberts Monday afternoon, spilling an estimated 3,500 gallons of tar and 35 gallons of diesel onto the road and blocking both lanes of traffic. Emergency responders spent the next 10 hours clearing the roadway before reopening it to the public.
New York State Police responded to a reported property damage accident between Chapel Pond and Round Pond at 2:51 p.m. Truck driver Gregory M. Breault sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was sent to Glens Falls Hospital for treatment for neck and lower left arm pain.
The crash and subsequent spill required substantial mitigation. A hazmat team was on the scene, as well as firefighters, the Essex County Sheriff’s Department and the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation. Further cleanup was completed by the trucking company’s cleanup team Tuesday, according to Essex County Emergency Services Director Matthew Watts.
“We get there and we mitigate the issue,” he said.
Emergency responders brought out spill pads and booms to contain the spill and prevent it from entering nearby waterways.
“The majority of the spill was along the road surface and immediate shoulder with some impacts along the embankment,” the DEC said. “There were limited impacts to the nearby stream, a tributary to the Bouquet River.”
Additionally, the New York state Department of Transportation brought out sand, which both absorbed the spill and was used to create a dike. Members of the Essex County Sheriff’s Department helped to dig trenches. The DEC is “overseeing the cleanup to ensure it is protective of public health and the environment.”
Both State Police and Watts expressed gratitude to Corey Howe, a UPS driver who was the first person on the scene following the crash. Howe witnessed the accident, removed the front windshield of the overturned truck, cut Breault’s seatbelt and helped Breault out of the truck. He also extinguished a small fire before authorities arrived.
“The UPS driver that stopped and got the gentleman out of the truck, he did a really good job,” Watts said.
State Police has not finalized its report on this crash and declined to immediately share details about the cause of the crash by deadline Tuesday.
