Whiteout conditions Friday caused crashes and traffic diversions as well as dangerous conditions for first responders, according to Mark Picerno of the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

“There’s two car accidents. It’s whiteout conditions. Demars Boulevard is closed down. Dogs and cats living together … things are going wrong,” Picerno said.

“It’s just dangerous enough getting out there to the calls. And then directing traffic in whiteout conditions is probably one of the most dangerous things you ever have to do because nobody sees you.”

There were two crashes on state Route 30 in Tupper Lake near Trail’s End Tavern. One had an injury, but the injured person declined medical treatment or transport to a hospital, according to Picerno. Traffic there was reduced to one lane.

Demars Boulevard was shut down at 2:30 p.m. with traffic control points, and traffic was diverted through McLaughlin Avenue.

Picerno said the department had 13 members out in the village redirecting traffic and responding to vehicle crashes.

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to a weather-related two-vehicle collision at the intersection of River Street and Lake Flower Avenue at 3:24 p.m. The Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad transported one driver to Adirondack Medical Center with minor injuries.

State Police said there was also one crash in North Hudson and another in Keene Friday, with no injuries reported.

Picerno said Friday night that emergency services opened up the roads in Tupper Lake around 4 p.m., and things had been quiet since, with no more accidents.
